FAQs

Find an answer to a hospital-related PPE question below.

How should PPE be stored?

All PPE should be stored in the original packaging
that it came in. If left exposed, the effectiveness of the product can
deteriorate. This is could be as a result of sunlight, dirt or UV rays.

How do you know if a gown is fluid-resistant?

It should say on the packaging of all gowns whether they’re fluid-resistant or not. These will be tested by the manufacturers and they won’t be allowed to be distributed if they fail to comply to the standards required.

How often should PPE be replaced?

There is no set lifespan for PPE. They don’t go off, so all you need to do is make sure that the items you have are still in compliance with the current rules and regulations. As changes have recently been made to this (circa 2018), you may need to check your items are still useable.

Does wearing gloves remove the need for hand washing?

No. It’s important to disinfect your hands both prior to donning and after doffing your equipment. While the PPE should have provided a high level of protection, it’s a sensible option to eliminate all concern by using an alcohol-based cleaning solution.
