Sharps Disposal

Guidelines for the safe disposal of sharps:

Use Sharps Bins: Place used sharps immediately into puncture-resistant, leak-proof containers specifically designed for sharps disposal. These containers should be made of rigid plastic and have a secure lid to prevent accidental needlesticks or spills.

Do Not Overfill Bins: Sharps bins should not be overfilled. Fill the container only up to the designated fill line, and securely close the lid when the container is full.

Keep Bins Secure: Place sharps bins in locations that are easily accessible to users but out of reach of children and unauthorized individuals. Secure containers to prevent tipping or spillage.

Label Bins: Sharps bins should be clearly labeled with the biohazard symbol and the words "Sharps" or "Biohazardous Waste" to indicate their contents. Labels should also include the name of the facility and the date of initial use.

Do Not Dispose of Sharps in Household Waste: Do not dispose of sharps in household trash or recycling bins, as this poses a risk to waste handlers and the community. Sharps containers should be disposed of through designated sharps disposal programs or facilities.

Dispose of Full Bins Properly: When sharps bins are full, arrange for proper disposal through authorized medical waste disposal services or facilities. Contact local waste management authorities or healthcare facilities for information on sharps disposal programs in your area.
